Another casino is going to wade into sports betting in Pennsylvania.

Harrah’s Philadelphia has petitioned the PA Gaming Control Board to request approval for sports wagering, the third such petition in the state.

Here comes Harrah’s

It should be no huge shock that Harrah’s is the latest to jump into the sports betting pool in PA.

The casino is just outside of Philadelphia and has an existing racetrack

Its parent company, Caesars, is already offering both physical and online sports betting in New Jersey, as well as betting via its properties in Mississippi and Nevada. The petition indicates that Scientific Games will provide “sports wagering equipment and the sports wagering engine” for its sportsbook.

And that makes three…

It marks the third casino to take that step toward offering PA sports betting. The owners of both Parx Casino and Hollywood Casino petitioned to offer wagering this summer.

There are in theory 13 available sports betting licenses in the state — one for each of the existing 12 PA casinos and one that will be built in Philadelphia’s stadium district.

The landscape for US sports betting

Pennsylvania is in the process of moving toward legal sports wagering and could be the sixth state to have it. Retail sportsbooks could be open as soon as this fall, with online wagering to follow at a later date.

The other states with legal wagering:

  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • Delaware
  • West Virginia
  • Mississippi

Rhode Island also plans to offer sports betting before winter.
